Bihar is a state in Modern India. However there is one another Bihar in Hungary.
Hajdu-BIHAR (Hungary) is a county of Upper Hungary in the province “Beyond the Theiss”, is bounded on the east by Transylvania. This populous district of Hungary is in many parts intersected by swamps and forests. In the east it is encircled by the Carpathians of which the Biharyzegy and Csaf are here the most elevated points and is full of forests. In the west the surface is covered with swamps in many parts and several square miles around Komadi are occupied by the great Sar Retje, a tangle formed by the overflowing of the Berettyo and Kerbs rivers. In this part of Bihar there are a number of hills that are of artificial construction that were raised in the remote ages.
The principal rivers in the county are the Black Koros, the Rapid Koros and the Beretty which pour down from the mountainous districts into the plain country and being unhindered by any barrier on either bank overflow the adjacent lands. This gives rise to the numerous and extensive morasses for which Bihar is known for. In this way the Rapid Kiiri alone has during the last half century laid above 109,000 acres under water. This has caused tracts to become desolate and rendered unhealthy.
However, as one approaches the mountain regions, the air becomes pure and decent. In the Vale of Korotsh which extends over an area thirty seven miles in length and eighteen in breadth the climate is so genial that few parts of Hungary are superior to it in cultivation and productiveness. On the whole however Bihar is accounted as one of the most fertile counties in Hungary as it contains 2160834 acres of available soil of which most are being the used for agriculture and 71,078 are laid out in vineyards and it raises grains of all kinds in good abundance particularly wheat of very superior quality. Fruit and vegetables are of good quality the wine and tobacco productions are on the rise. Indian corn hemp flax and saffron are among the other vegetable products of this county.
